WHY GOD PERMITTED PROBLEM
One age long question that has consistently defiled universally agreed the answer is why a good God allow evil happening, Philosopher query if God is actually and powerful as claimed how do we then have evil, disaster, and calamity prevailing. Christians are not immune from asking the same question “where is God when I hurt”.
I may not be presenting the most convincing answers but, I believe the following suggestion will bring succor to someone currently hurting as it has done for me. Almost all Christians at a point in our walk with God would have had a dose of a period when God seems far or completely absent. Why then does God permit trials, problems, and problem?
1- The effect of the fall– Man is the architect of his own fortune. So, one of the resultant effects of Adam and Eve’s disobedience and eventual fall as read in God’s pronouncement of them is what we see today as a calamity, trial, failure, sickness, death, etc. Gen 3:16-19.
2- Trails develop our spiritual muscle– You hardly hear an athlete tell you maintaining his shape was without pains. Rom 5:3-4
Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. 4 Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. James 1:2-4 NIV
Watch the word develop and mature in this bible passage, it is a replica of you grows to adulthood with several bruises to show for it.
One of my spiritual mentors bought a car and notice whenever the speed of the car gets to a certain level, the car will be vibrating as to break into pieces. So, for several years he will not reach that particular speed. One day, he took the car to a new mechanic for repair, so they took the car out together for testing. He cautioned the mechanic as they approach the speed. When it reaches the speed violent vibration began and the Pastor told the mechanic to slow down, but in defiance, he accelerated the more. As soon as they exceeded that particular speed, the vehicle normalizes to the amazement of this Pastor. So I have been limiting the speed of this car and slow down my mileage the Pastor wondered.
Taking us from our comfort zone through a difficult situation is one way God uses to mature us.
3- To prove our faith- The acid test of true friendship and loyalty is when the going gets tough. It is always easy to please and praise God when everything is rosy. In this, you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. 7 These have come so that your faith of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire, may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory, and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. 1 Peter 1:6-7 NIV
One of the ways to prove our faith in God is for Him to withhold at times the answers to our prayers. The best from a tea bag will not come out unless you allow it to pass through a hot cup of water. When God told Abraham to sacrifice his son, He did not ask him to do it at the back of his house, so He took him three days to get to the appointed mountain. The reason for this is that Abraham will have the opportunity to reconsider his decision whether it is reasonable or not. God has never confirmed him the father of faith until he drew the knife to the neck of Isaac.
A friend in need is a friend indeed they say. Our loyalty to God is proved in a time of seeming absence during our trial and distress. God permitted untold hardship in the life of Job to prove to Satan job’s loyalty to Him.
Father Abraham and Job’s faith and sincerity were tested before they become a center of reference today. Nobody gets a medal without been proved in any contest of life.
4-Meant to correct and discipline us. Some lessons in life that left a lasting impression on us are those we learned the hard way through personal experience. The prodigal son never appreciated the security and affluence he enjoyed in his father’s house until he learned the hard way. At times like the father of the prodigal son, God will allow us to have our way to experience the bitter side of life as a means of correcting us. When my friend had his first child, his wife will always shield the boy from touching the lantern. One day when I visited them, I strike a match stick and point to him. As usual, he ran to grab it when he got burnt, he screams and ran to the mother. That was the last time he would approach any kind of flame. Heb 12:5-11.
It was good for me to be afflicted
so that I might learn your decrees. Psalm 119:71 NIV.
Negative experiences of life correct and discipline us from our error.
5-To humble us and for the benefit of others- Even though I have received such wonderful revelations from God. So to keep me from becoming proud, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me and keep me from becoming proud.
2 Cor 12:7-10 NLT. At another time God allowed this burden and pains to remind us the world is not at our feet without God. Nebuchadnezzar acknowledges the sovereignty of God in a hard way. Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. 2cor 1:3-4 NIV. The good, bad, and ugly recorded in the Bible were meant for our example. People will willingly listen to you if you have a practical testimony of what you are telling them. Our bad moments are to teach us and others to learn from. Where and when we overcome those challenges, it proves to people passing through a similar situation that what they read in the bible are not a myth, but the same testimony is happening in our generation right before our very eyes.
6- It is one of our marks of discipleship-
Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange was happening to you. 13 But rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed. 1 Peter 4:12-14 NIV.
The Lord himself told the disciple while here on earth that people will treat them and by implication us unfairly just because we are Christian. So, if you still want to stand your ground as a disciple then part of the total package of both salvation and discipleship includes disappointment, unanswered prayer, denial, etc. If you live, study, and work among the unbeliever and never at any time face any opposition then you are not different from them. Once I work on a committee to execute a project but because I was not ready to compromise I was eventually blacklisted from that committee
7- To preserve us. Joseph replied, “Don’t be afraid. Do I act for God? 20 Don’t you see, you planned evil against me but God used those same plans for my good, as you see all around you right now – life for many people? Gen 50:19-20 MESSAGE. Years ago I approached a landlord for her shop that was strategically located, cheap and not far from my residence. After praying so much with my friends I believed I would get the place. When I got to the woman as promised, she told me the place has been given to another person. Guess who got the place; it was my friend who lives far away. As expected I was devastated because my prayers were not answered. Later, my friend approached me so we could share the shop into two, however, I do not have enough money to pay though the amount he demanded was exactly the amount he owed me. Ideally, I should have asked him to use that to cover the payment, but I never exploit that option thinking he will pay me when he is financially convenient. Eventually, I lost out. A Few months after that incident, my friend called to inform me that his wife had not sold a single item since she got to the shop. However, the shocking aspect of the story is that the Alfa (Muslim cleric) next shop told him the landlady has charmed the shop and usually people will pack out of the shop on their own barely over six months they moved in once they could not make any sales. Beloved, it was then I realized why God did not answer my prayers to get the shop. Imagine if God had not taken Joseph out of his family and Potiphar’s house he could have been killed or his destiny mortgaged under Potiphar’s wife’ seduction pressure. When we suffer delay or denial to our prayers, God must have gotten better plans for us.
8- For the benefit of others. He comforts us whenever we suffer. That is why whenever other people suffer, we are able to comfort them by using the same comfort we have received from God. 2 Cor 1:4 (GW)
In his wisdom, God wired all events together for his own glory, though we may not understand why. At times God allowed us to pass through certain experience so our life could be a testimony, encouragement or a challenge to anyone. For instance, if you’ve passed through a tough time that ended with glory. Someone is encouraged that his case is not beyond redemption. Another may be challenged to hold on to Christ in spite of the current challenges he is passing through. Jesus went through a series of pains and problem as the son of man so He can offer succor to us as we daily pass through tough times. Heb 4:15
When God permits trouble in the life of any of His children he must have got a good reason. We may not like it or understand why, but if we trust him enough, we can be sure something better will come out of it. Whether for us or someone else, now or later the experience will definitely not going to be a waste.
